Using NotebookLM to Synthesize Concepts Across Sources

NotebookLM- notebooklm.google.com

NotebookLM (NLM) is a tool created by Google that allows for creation of a ‘smart journal’, which synthesizes sources (up to 50) and allows for analysis and synthesis between those sources.

For example, you can upload 50 peer-reviewed papers all about insulin resistance, and that notebook will allow you to ‘talk’ to the Notebook about what everyone in those 50 papers is doing in their insulin resistance studies, and the robot will have read through and memorized all of the content within them. You can ask questions, compare results, draw conclusions, and more, all with NLM.

When you create a new Notebook, you see this screen, listing all of the uploadable source types:

Once the Notebook is created, you are given many options for how to interact with it.

This includes:

  • Selecting only specific sources to interact with
  • Finding new, related ones
  • Creating a surprisingly good podcast about the subject that is hosted by two digital personalities
  • Adding notes
  • Creating a Study Guide
  • Creating a summarizing Briefing Doc
  • Creating an FAQ overhead of the sources
  • Generating a Timeline

NLM is very helpful for having whiteboard sessions around specific topics, and for tracking conclusions across many papers.

And best of all, it’s free!!
